

Conductor - Ulf Schirmer
A native of Eschenhausen near Bremen, Ulf Schirmer studied at the Music Academy in Hamburg with György Ligeti, Christoph von Dohnanyi and Horst Stein. He was assistant to Lorin Maazel and resident conductor at the Vienna State Opera, General Music Director of the City of Wiesbaden as well as Chief Conductor of the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra with which he went on different tours through Europe and America and made his debut with the BBC Proms concerts.
As a freelance artist, Ulf Schirmer regulary conducts at the Vienna State Opera, at Bregenz Festival , at Salzburg Festival, Graz Opera, at Opera Bastille in Paris , and at Deutsche Oper Berlin . He was most successful at Scala Milan, the New National Theatre Tokyo and with a new productions at Grand Theatre Geneva.
Ulf Schirmer’s numerous concert activities include collaboration with orchestras such as the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the Vienna and Bamberg Symphony Orchestras, Staatskapelle Dresden, Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Orchestra of La Scala Milan, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Rotterdam Philharmonics, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo as well as Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras.
Future engagements include productions at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Leipzig Opera, the New National Theatre Tokyo, Bregenz Festival as well as numerous concerts.
Recordings: CAPRICCIO with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the Vienna Philharmonics (DECCA); Nielsen’s MASKARADE and 4th SYMPHONY (DECCA) and LULU (CHANDOS), both with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. For MASKARADE he got two GRAMMY nominations.
Ulf Schirmer is Professor for music analysis and music dramaturgy at the Academy of Music in Hamburg.
